Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) imaging
Assessment of the bony structures of the jaw joint in closed and open positions, for joint pain, joint noises and limited mouth opening.
TMJ imaging assesses bony changes in the condyle and the glenoid fossa and plays a supporting role in the evaluation of joint disorders.
What is assessed?
- Degenerative change and flattening of the condyle
- Condylar position in the closed and open positions
- Structural change following trauma
Note that the articular disc and other soft tissues cannot be assessed with X-ray imaging; where this is required, your clinician may request a different modality.
